to more than 4,200 miles east of Florida in the Atlantic ocean bed, underwater robots have found one of the most bizarre and enigmatic formations that nature has occurred, and that scientists have dubbed the Lost City . It is of giant carbonate chimneys that rise from the top of a mountain at 800 meters deep called Atlantis, and indeed evoke the buildings of a submerged New York, reaching a height over 30 meters. The water flows here more than 90 degrees Celsius in a cold environment and high pressures, and under such special conditions as carbon starts the rocks. Of this interaction comes a miracle: the creation of hydrocarbons through a reaction called the Fischer-Tropsch, which is "very important in the industry, offering a formula to get different types of fuels like natural gas and oil types "says Gioria Proskurowski, Institute Woods Hole Oceanographic Massachusetts (USA). In other words, this finding, reported earlier this year in the journal Science , suggests that the sea floor can function as a huge petrochemical industry, and has shaken the preconceived ideas we have on oil : its components are formed without accumulation of countless dead animals or plants.
